Sucking Celery

We are doing Sonlight Science 1, and one of the experiments was to put celery in food-colored water.  This works wonderfully with a white carnation also, actually you would get more dramatic results from the flower.

Here is the celery before.

.... and after!

When you're done, cut the bottom off the celery so you can see the little tubes and how they suck up the water through them.  Also, we talked about "bendy" celery, and if you put it in water it gets stiff again, as the tubes are once again filled up with water.  They really liked this!  This is great for preschoolers too.
