Nature Study On a Windy, Cloudy Day

Even though it was windy (think hair flying straight up) and cloudy, we meandered around a great park one day.  From diving ducks (I had never seen one dive before!) to beautiful scarlet seeds, we had a great time!

I'm just letting the photos tell the story.

Magnolia seeds on seed pods with red seeds intact. Magnolia seeds are vibrant red.  In the background, is a lovely flame red tree.

Unidentified bird. It was so interesting! It actually DOVE under the water, not just the kind of thing you see with ducks and geese with their rear ends flipping up. This bird dove under the water and stayed there for a while.

Lovely bridge over the pond.

Foliage around the pond

  1. Great pictures! Looks like a good nature study, despite the wind. Did you figure out what your mystery bird is yet? Maybe a coot?

  2. I looked coot up on Wiki, and it is definitely one of these! Thanks for identifying it for us. My sister was convinced it was a loon, but I wasn't so sure. Now I know the expression "you old coot." The coot looks bald because of it's white head.
